Caring for the eyes of Mackay since 1952.

We have been caring for the eyes of Mackay since 1952 and along the way we have reinvested into our practice to provide the most up to date, most technologically equipped and most experienced optometrist in Mackay today. We have been here for the long haul and still are. Simply put we give you and your eyes more time, more in depth assessment, and more options for vision care than any other optometrist in the Mackay region.

At most franchise “supermarket” optometry outlets the average time spent with the optometrist is 15 minutes. Our comprehensive eye examinations are 40 minutes in duration and are more in depth than anything that can be offered in 15 minutes. Check out our equipment and you will see so much more than you will ever have experienced in a “supermarket” store.

Independent & Individual

We treat you as an individual because we are.

We pride ourselves on being thorough; our eye examinations evaluate every detail about your eyes and your vision function in order to ensure we don’t miss any pathology and your symptoms are fully investigated. A reliable baseline for future comparison is the best way to make certain no eye disease goes undetected.

Time is taken to explain each of our procedures and our findings. Time to give you the best recommendations, and discuss all the options to suit all your visual needs. Our philosophy is to always recommend the product or a series of products to best suit the current and future requirements of your vision. Whether this is glasses, contact lenses, eye exercises, vision training, sports protection, sunglasses, impact resistant lenses, preventive lens coatings, vision stress reducing colour, eye drops etc. we use our skills to provide you with the advice to ensure you get the best out of you vision now and in the future.

Concern for your eye health

Longer appointments for the care you deserve.

We give advice, treatment, referral and pre and post-operative care for glaucoma, cataract, macular degeneration, pterygium, corneal grafts, laser surgery, refractive surgery, and other eye conditions. We work in co-operative care of our patients with both local ophthalmologists and sub specialist ophthalmologists in Brisbane.

Keeping up to date with the latest technological advances in equipment, eye care and becoming prescribers of ophthalmic medicines, has always been the aim of the practice principals. We aim to provide the best primary eye care possible. Dry eyes, sore eyes, foreign body removal, red eye assessment and treatment, iritis, blepharitis, conjunctivitis, meibomian gland dysfunction, excessive lacrimation can all be treated by our therapeutically endorsed optometrists. Annual diabetes eye health maintenance, via dilated fundal examinations, OPTOS Optomap screening and OCT macular scans we have the facility to ensure any early diabetic changes and track any changes even in the far periphery of your retina.

Latest Technology

We look wider and deeper for the earliest detection of eye disease.

In 2006 we renovated our practice and incorporated a Retinal Camera, an Automated Refractor, a non-contact Tonometer and a Corneal Topographer. In 2014 the retinal camera still used in opposition practices was made redundant by our new OPTOS Optomap which takes digital retinal images with up to 5 times wider field than any other digital retinal camera.

We strive to continually raise the bar for the standard of eye care in Mackay.

In 2011 we invested in an OCT (Ocular Coherence Tomographer). This machine enables us to continue to be at the forefront of eye health care. Accurate contact lens fitting and corneal thickness measurements via the anterior segment cross sectional views from the OCT have allowed us to increase the range of contact lenses we fit. The glaucoma nerve fibre layer assessments and macular assessments from the OCT, aids in our accurate diagnosis and management of eye conditions such as glaucoma and macular degeneration: reducing the need for expensive referral to ophthalmologists. Intuitive Colorimetry was introduced to our practice in 2014 and we now are able to fully assess for dyslexia and visual stress and determine if coloured lenses will help improve reading, reduce headaches and enhance lives.

Innovative Solutions

Vision correction while you sleep, Specialised contact lenses, Dry eye treatment and much much more…

Since 2006 we have offered CRRT (Corneal reshaping refractive therapy) otherwise known as orthokeratology  This is vision correction whilst you sleep.  This provides visual freedom allowing you to enjoy most daytime activities without glasses or contact lenses. This non-surgical corneal correction is achieved by wearing contact lenses whilst you sleep.

We specialise in complicated contact lens fitting for corneal conditions such as keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration and Salzmann’s nodular degeneration as well as lenses for chronic dry eye. No other practice in Mackay can boast our experience fitting these lenses.

Myopia control is a service that is unique to Buck & Todd Optometrist within the Mackay region. With experience practicing  Orthokeratology since 2006, Ieuan is the only accredited orthokeratologist in Mackay, experienced in using 4 different retainer manufacturer’s designs to ensure the best design selection based on your prescription and corneal topography. Using orthokeratology and other environmental and behavioural changes allows us to put the brakes on myopia progression and stop the glasses update cycle of every 12 months or less.

Look and see you best

Access to over 20,000 designer frames.

We carry a selection of frames which match those offered by the chain stores. However quality product that will provide clearer, sharper vision, with lighter thinner lenses and less distortion is always our first recommendation. For our first choice of lens and frame we always recommend the best product for the prescription, frame and patient requirements. Being independent gives us the opportunity to seek frames from any number of suppliers rather than being limited by head office to a select few.

Thinner, Clearer, Lighter lenses

Not all lenses are the same.

New spectacle lenses are now thinner, lighter and clearer than ever before, and now with Transitions Generation VII lenses, we can provide you with a clear lens that tints in the sun to provide more convenient glare protection.

Polarized transition lens Transitions Vantage offers even more choice.

Polarised prescription lenses from Maui Jim can now be custom made so you cannot tell the difference between a prescription sunglass and an off the shelf pair, except for the prescription.

Children’s Vision Specialist

Help with learning difficulties, Dyslexia, and reducing stress on developing vision systems.

Behavioural Optometry encompasses vision rather than seeing, incorporating free space and binocular vision to aid the function of those with dyslexia, dysphonecia, dyseidicia, learning and developmental delays. Our optometrists are always building their skills towards understanding the complexities of vision processing at the neurological level and how accurate eye tracking, eye convergence and accommodation, with sustained effort can improve children’s ability to attain higher levels of reading and comprehension abilities. We understand colour can help reduce reading stress and we are the only optometry practice north of Brisbane with an Intuitive Colorimeter.

So Much more than just glasses

Sorry, we do not bulk bill; to provide the best possible care requires the latest technology and ongoing continued education and we provide the best care possible for your most precious sense. If your eyes aren’t worth a bit more time and money then what is? We pride ourselves on innovation, information and intuition based on experience.

We want to know as much about how you use your eyes as possible, so we ask questions, we are interested in your answers and we offer solutions from a vast array of different sources that are not available at chain stores.

Please check the list of services we perform, and whilst not every procedure will be relevant to your needs you know we have the capability to ensure you get the best care.
